notes

Death of the author - Looking at the piece, audience finding out meaning for themselves rather than an 'author' telling them what to think
Everything is a 'text' - Anything we can see we can read
Intertextuality - One thing that relates to another
Visual Communication
Assumptions [my dog & the arrow] the idea that a dog should understand that pointing means to go over there.
Cultural modes of signification
What is Graphic design?
A sign is "something which stands to somebody for something in some capacity" -charles sanders
Graphics originated from cave drawings [40,00 AD] .They had different styles & some were almost logo like flat colour, vector style drawings.
Text / font history
History of Visual Communication
Chinese have over 4750 characters which are very pictorial
Cuneiform = wedge shaped, referring to the marks left on the edges of the text when creating the writing symbols.
one of the first written languages. written from left to right.
The Alphabet
Originates in Egypt
The Rosetta Stone shows Hieroglyphics, Hieratic script & Greek alphabet used in Egypt from the time of the third century B.C.
Romans were the first to use baseline within text as before letters would be set in more of a tight form them could now extend on letters such as g & p.

Books used to be very expensive as the only way to re create them would have been to copy the whole thing by hand, this would also mean there would be more room for mistakes while copying. Some people may have been writing for 14hours a day, this meant that because of the long process of re-producing them, the only books likely to have been copied were of great importance at the time such as the bible.

The Book of Kells, was highly decorated or illustrated, it is a 'insular' which means it was produced in monastic centres in Britain arround the seventh & eighth centuries. They were the first manuscripts to use spaces between words to make it easier to read. They used decorative, abstract patterns adopted from Anglo-Saxon & Celtic metal work.
Illuminated Manuscript = decorated with silver or gold leaf, heavily illustrated.
Lithography = 18th century, this was used to write/ draw on a surface & used as a print.
The first photo was in 1826

Constructivists - Russian Movement, politically motivated based on social changes, rejecting the western development. A leading designer of this time was Lazar Markovich [El] Lissitzky

The Avantgarde = Front Guard, new /uneasy / untraditional
Futurism = explores every medium of art.
Dada 1960-1920 - response to rejecting new design, breaking logic.

The Social role of graphic design
-Largely focused on 'Visual style'
-can cause problems with appropriateness
-importance of ideas
Political
-changing view points, expecting to effect beliefs
Information design
-illustrations
-info

"Quality in graphic design is measured by the changes it produces in the audience"

from this quote I get the idea that graphics design can be seen by anyone as good, and might been seen by others as bad, I think it's a personal opinion whether or not you think it's a good design. But I also think that a design could be seen as successful if it does what it was intended for, e.g. if the purpose is to make the audience have a different opinion on something and it does then it has been successful.

Found Creative Practices

Today I travelled from Rangworthy to Bristol by car to go shopping and noted down on my phone some of the things I noticed relating to creative practices.
On the way in the car
Road signs, Company/ business signs logos & name e.g Bupa, all shop name plates & sign-age, Cars with advertising on them, Bus billboard ads, parking signs, symbols such as disabled parking, road markings, Menus in the cafe, packaging, photography and edited images used in the cafe / restaurant

The mall to Debenhams
parking ticket, Signs and symbols for directions, buttons in lifts, door push/pull signs, brand labels that are very recognisable by the logo and style.
-Cafe printed signs for cakes, labels on sandwiches, drinks, sauces.
This is an image of the packaging for mayonnaise

New packaging for chocolate Orange.

Tesco's garage sign, with logo and house style colour

Previous Research

I have previously researched quite a lot of different Media from Artists, to graphic designers, illustrators & photographers. Also looking at techniques, program tutorials etc.
I love all aspects of media & design & just being creative.

One think I gained a lot from researching was concert photography and looking at lenses for SLR's, photography passes to gain access, experimenting with camera settings and in the end bought a smaller Canon Powershot  camera, as it had a fixed lens I was able to take it in to venues without needing a pass & because the settings were pretty similar to my SLR I could get used to using it on manual settings and without the flash.
I learnt from research that people who photograph concerts have to stick to three main rules
+No flash
+3 song rule [they can only photograph the first 3 songs so they aren't always in front of the people paying to see the show]
+Listen to everything the security says

These are 3 of my favourite photos I took this year

Creative Practice, Graphic Design

The creative Practice course in particular the Graphics route interested me as I like to try and broaden my approach to work & find new ways of working with an open mind, which I thought this course would help me to do. Being able to work along side people from other pathways such as photography and fine art should be an extra benefit as they may have more ideas and suggestions about the way something can be done differently & I have an interest in all of the media routes.

Two years time...
In two years time I would hope to have a much better understanding of graphics design, how it's used more widely in industries & be in a position where I was able to work. I would also like to be even more creative and come up with a collection of ideas not just settling for the first idea.

An Exciting Image

The last image that I found exciting was this album cover design for Tinie Tempah 'Disc-Overy' album. As soon as I got hold of a copy I looked through the booklet hoping to find the small print details of the designers involved in the making of the artwork & found the following...
+Photography by Rick Guest
+Design by Richard Welland
+Cityscape Illustration by Mario Belem represented by Debut Art

I love designs that are, as I would describe as being 'Fantasy' looking which is what I think of this the brightness, lighting & 'magical' feel to the design looks great alongside the photo.
I would have liked to have found the original illustration for the cityscape

When the cover design was first premièred on the web I instantly loved the design, from previous single covers I was expecting something along the lines of this, and looking at it in more detail you can see there is a lot of different elements to the design. I actually started an acrylic painting of the design that I am currently in the process of working on.
